I awakened yesterday morning in the Blair House's Spring Suite and looked through the lace curtains to see that winter had made a surprise visit to Troy. An inch or more of snow frosted the trees, the lawn, and the iron railings of the fence but fortunately the roads were clear and I headed back home, a little reluctant to leave this magnificent old house.
As I drove, enjoying the fairy-tale surroundings, by an odd coincidence I was listening to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe -- in which Narnia is locked in the icy clutches of the White Witch, whose powers have caused it to be always winter but never Christmas.
It was a fine weekend, a beautiful drive -- and good to be home again.
