A couple of friends have been telling me that I have to see this episode because the artists they feature are so up my ally. I finally found a really amazing blog post about both of the artists Noelle Rigaudie, and Anna-wili Highfield on justblog.com (and now I must subscribe to this blog as well becasue it's beautiful). Here are some examples of their work.

Pregnancy Doll

One day I happened upon this beautiful picture. I realized that it was an antique biological model, but couldn't find out much for about it. Tonight while browsing through one of my favorite blogs morbidanatomy I think I might have found my answer. I believe it is a "Pregnancy Doll."

"In the 18th and 19th centuries, sideshow carnivals known asmisemono were a popular form of entertainment for the sophisticated residents of Edo (present-day Tokyo). The sideshows featured a myriad of educational and entertaining attractions designed to evoke a sense of wonder and satisfy a deep curiosity for the mysteries of life. One popular attraction was the pregnant doll. Although it is commonly believed that these dolls were created primarily to teach midwives how to deliver babies, evidence suggests they were also used for entertainment purposes. For example, records from 1864 describe a popular show in Tokyo’s Asakusa entertainment district that educated audiences about the human body. The show featured a pregnant doll whose abdomen could be opened to reveal fetal models depicting the various stages of prenatal development... (July 2001 issue of Geijutsu Shincho magazine) " In morbidanatomy post about the doll she references another post on pinktentacle that has even more info. So happy I finally found out what it is.

Mumbly-Jumbly Mumblety-Peg

On an otherwise dull day of mulling through my Facebook stream an amazing photo caught my eye. Upon further investigation of Mumbly-Jumbly Mumblety-Peg profile I found to my delight that this was not just a rare gem of a picture, but an entire collection of stunning photographs. All taken by an amazing artist traveling the globe and shooting mostly skulls and skeletons in different churches, religious rituals, museums, and burial spots. Basically wherever he might find them. His profile doesn't give a lot of information, but from what I have seen of his posts I believe a book of his photos is on the horizon. If so I will be the first one to purchase because his work just makes my heart sing.

Victorian Prosthetic Arm

I just saw this and had to share. The craftsmanship of it is really amazing. I would just love to have it laying around my house as a piece of sculpture. Look at the fingers they are so creepy and delicate at the same time. I wish I knew who this was made for . I'm guessing it was for a woman.

Sarah Perry

The other day I had the great fortune to run across the artwork of Sarah Perry. The piece that stopped me dead in my tracks is this amazing sculpture she constructed out of animal bones called "Pull of the Moon". The shear scale, and craftsmanship involved in stating such an undertaking would be daunting to say the least, but her story of how she came upon the idea is even more charming...

"Pull of the Moon came about while hiking in the mountains of California. I stopped on the path, struck by all of the life around me: Trees, scrub jays, lichens, ground squirrels and airplanes. All of the billions of lives that have gone before evolving from the deep past into this dazzling diversity. Then there came the image of a spiral staircase (DNA-like) made from thousands of minute bones ascending ethereally, carrying our forgotten histories... Sculpture, for me, is how I communicate my subtlest emotions and deepest beliefs succinctly. It can be frightening as an uncensored dream, humorous, or touch on the unknown and unknowable. At its best, it can reflect the human capacity for awe."( From Sarah Perry's artist statement)

The Dreamer’s Gate

Collector Australia is home to a fascinating piece of sculpture called The Dreamer’s Gate. Started in 1993 and worked on for 6 years by Tony Phantastes. After being abandoned for 10 years this landmark is sadly in danger of being torn down. This kind of ingenuity, and nuttiness is what makes the world and interesting place to live in, and sets humans apart. It would be so unfortunate to let something like this vanish forever. Metallic Beings

I was so excited to happen upon this artists work the other day. His name is John Haley III, and his metalsmithing skills are exceptional. His work makes my mind wander to alien exoskeletons, and foreign, harsh world made of metal and dust. So impressive!

For years, I have been obsessed with all forms of Dia De Los Muertos items. So when I found the shop CarmelaJay, and the amazing twist that her and her partner has put on the holiday I was thrilled! I want every last one of them.

Steampunk Monk

On one of my wild wonderings around the internet one day, I happened upon this little creature. His elegant lines and, stalwart character stopped me in my tacks. Entitled the “Steampunk Monk” created out of ceramic by the nimble fingers of Barbara Dunshee . A truly haunting figure reminding one of dreamscapes long forgotten, or the possible future of man evolution.

Aid for Spiders

With wistful thoughts of fall crossing my mind. I have no idea why it just is. I just had to share one of my favorite artists. Her name is Nina Katchadourian. She did a series of work a little while ago where she mended spider webs, and photographed the results. Ponder the effort and patience you have to have to tackle such and undertaking. I have also found a kit if you want to follow in her footsteps. BRILLIANT!

An Ode To Ernest

I am a HUGE fan of Ernst Haeckel illustrations. He was a German Zoologist who drew scientific illustrations of various forms of life. His most breathtaking images were drawings of sea life. Haeckel captured their essence in such a haunting way, adding a vibrancy to them that is beyond compare. Given that it’s no wonder why I wouldn’t absolutely fall in love with this creation by Timothy Horn, entitled Medusa. Measuring 9 feet wide and made out of cast silicone and fiber optics. Such an impressive interpretation, and a masterful use of his medium to see it in person I would imagine one could only stand in awe.

Viking Spookiness!!!

I miss Autum so I’m trying desperately to project myself into a fall mood filled with cool breezes, and the smells of Halloween. With these thoughts in mind I was flipping through my sisters sketchbook, and I happened upon this picture. It’s a sculpture in Iceland that’s just so haunting, and instantly brought fall into my thoughts. The skeletonized ship, the snow on the ground, the moodiness of the sky, and the image of Vikings running around, (Vikings are just creepy, like pirates on steroids). I researched the sculpture and it’s located in Reykjavík Iceland, in the town of Sólfaru. So beautiful, I would love to see it in person one day.

AIR JELLY!!!

This is the millennium I was waiting for! One with abstract pretty flying things floating all about. I don't even care if they serve any sort of practical purpose as long as they are amazing looking, (and burn clean fuel). Created for the world by Festo is the Air Jelly. Do yourself a favor and click on the Air Jelly link. Pictures do not do this craft justice, you have to watch it in flight. It’s movements are so intricate and elegant I could sit and watch it all day long! Along with the Air Jelly they have made a water version called the Aqua Jelly which is equally as elegant if not more so. Then there is the Air Penguin !!!! So sleek!! What does it do? I don’t know, or care I’m just too stunned by its design to go any further than that! So pretty, it makes me happy just to look at them! Good job Festo!!!

Futuristic Elegance- The Work Of Patrice Hubert

I think one of my requirements for loving an artist is A- growing green with envy at their talent and B- not being about to fully describe it. Patrice Hubert is one of my new favorite artists, but for the life of me I can’t eloquently describe his work. Every time I try just a long stream of descriptions come out. Dark, mechanized, industrial, edgy, Baroque, otherworldly, AMAZING!!! Do yourself a favor and check out his website.
