Small Beauties

Inside, the house is crowded with greenery, Christmas decorations, bright colors and strings of little white lights -- all the excess and trappings of the season as we attempt to turn back the darkness. But outside, Nature's decorations are spare -- a minimalism that's refreshing and makes me stop to look at the little things .

Two months ago we were inundated in leaves, overwhelmed with Autumn, drowning in red and gold and orange and coral, but today it's the singularity of this one leaf-- this single brown leaf posed against a chunk of white quartz -- that catches my eye.

And this unseasonable forsythia blossom -- in Springtime it would be only an anonymous speck in a fountain of yellow but here at the beginning of winter it's a candle in the dark, a promise of rebirth from bare branches.

Small beauties of Nature's quiet season.
